Tidy Tip Tuesday: Don't forget the fans!

The hot weather of summer has us thinking about our fans. Not you, sweet reader (although we always think of you fondly and with gratitude!), but right now we mean the fans that are keeping us cool in this steamy season. There's nothing like a little bit of moving air to make heat and humidity more bearable.

It's easy to overlook fans when you are cleaning, whether it's your ceiling fans or a free-standing oscillator. While they are doing the hard work of cooling you down, they often pick up a fair amount of dust! With ceiling fans, the tops, edges, and even the bottoms of the blades can get a nice coating of gunk, while the grills of oscillating fans or window fans can pick up little fuzz collections.

For ceiling fans, always use good safety measures when using a ladder or step stool. If you have cathedral ceilings, this may be a job for a professional, unless you have a very tall, sturdy ladder and are comfortable with heights. For those of us with regular height ceilings, though, it is an easy job!

• Choose a sturdy, stable ladder or step stool that is tall enough that you can reach your fan without stretching too far or losing your balance. If you are really tall, you might not need anything!
• Turn off your fan and wait for the blades to stop rotating. If your fan has light fixtures, it is useful to turn the lights off so you're not blinded while you work.
• Shake the bottle of Dusting Spray and spritz your cloth, then wipe the top, sides, and bottom of each blade. Depending on how dusty your house is or how long it's been since the fan has been cleaned, you may need a couple clean rags.
• Dust off any other surfaces that you see need attention - the center hub or light fixtures always accumulate some fuzzies, too!
• If you've just unleashed a pile of dust bunnies on your floor, finish your task with a quick sweep or vacuum.

For free-standing fans or window fans, turn the fan off, then use a microfiber and Dusting Spray to wipe off the grills, knobs, and base. Some oscillating fans have removable grills that will let you really get into nooks and crannies. A very furry, big fan (like an old box fan) might benefit from using a vacuum brush attachment to get all those slats.

 All done! Just one more way to keep your cool, tidy style.
